ISS is an innovative and sustainable Portuguese marine biotech startup, dedicated to the discovery, development, production and commercialisation of sustainable and innovative ingredients derived from seaweeds, tailored to the needs of customers in cosmetics, nutraceuticals and petceuticals. Role summary
This role is for a Nutraceuticals Product Developer responsible for developing innovative and sustainable nutraceutical and petcare ingredients based on seaweed extracts according to regulatory requirements and customer needs. You will lead the ISS's nutraceutical ingredients development unit of a highly promising marine biotech startup based in Portugal, in close collaboration with an experienced and engaged R&D team and the CTO (Chief Technology Officer), as well as the R&D, operations and commercial teams. You will think and operate strategically, building a new product line and supporting the company’s strategic goals, growth and innovation roadmap.

What is the role?
Your main responsibilities will include but are not limited to the following:
- Develop innovative and sustainable nutritional and dietary supplement ingredients based on seaweed extracts for humans and animals according to regulatory requirements, manufacturing feasibility, quality, stability, and bioavailability, as well as market trends and customer needs.
- Ensure formulated ingredients meet quality standards, regulatory guidelines, and industry best practices. Collaborate with regulatory and quality teams to address any compliance-related issues.
- Generate technical reports, protocols, and documentation (e.g. technical data sheets, IP (patents), regulatory and product registrations, technical marketing materials) as needed.
- Work closely with cross-functional teams at ISS, including Sales, Project Management, Product Development, Quality Control, Regulatory Affairs, Quality Assurance, Technical Operations, and technology partners and customers.
- Collaborate with the production team to ensure successful scale-up of the developed ingredients and formulations from laboratory to production scale.
- Provide technical support during manufacturing to troubleshoot any ingredient formulation-related challenges.
- Be updated with the latest developments in ingredients formulation science and technological advancements in the dietary and pet care supplement industry.
- Bring innovation, research and development strategies of ingredient solutions for the nutraceutical and pet care industries.
- Drive the creation of IP associated with own product development portfolio and assist with the broader IP strategy execution, as warranted.
- Support the CTO and Lab Manager from funding applications to IDT project execution and reporting.
What we need from you?
To succeed in this role, you will have the following:
Skills:
- Degree or Master in Nutrition Sciences, Food Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Bioengineering or similar.
- Proved experience on nutraceutical/food industry and/or pet care.
- Experience in biochemical assays related to dietary supplement ingredients formulation.
- Knowledge of the regulatory dietary supplement industry.
- Ability to work in a multidisciplinary team, especially in close collaboration with external technology teams of partners and customers.
- Ability to lead projects team.
- Min 5-7 years of experience.
